#1 hugs make you live longer

#2 who is this girl anyway??

#3 I love what your friend said about feeling incredibly down because of someone you dont consider credible anyway. People dont define you Griffin, you define you by your reaction, and responses, and the way you live your life

#4 we'll talk about this soon ok?? keep your head up

This 'essay' gives a very interesting insight and I strongly agree myself to just about everything--except that unfortunately it is worse than you give credit for.
First of all, I feel it's necessary to point out that the science class scene you mentioned is the peak of Bella's intellegence. I'm half-way though the 4th book--her intelligence, common sense, or perhaps just basic brain functions steadily deteriorate until the fourth book. Then they jump off a cliff. The peak is sophomore science.
Second, while I have noticed many guys tend to share your point of view that women are being damaged, teenage boys and young men are also being attacked. Edward is portrayed as the perfect superbeing and boyfriends and other boys are constantly being compared to him. Teenage girls that don't know better shun them and set unrealistic expectations for men. I know a couple of women that do this.
Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed the books. They're a way to pass the time and I enjoyed the romance despite how cruel and unsatisfyingly codependent it is. I also have a dream boyfriend. I had what I considered unrealistic expectations at one time and I still somehow managed to find him. However, he is still human. I recognize that and also realize that he has a life of his own. If he considered getting killed because he thought--just thought--I had died (as Edward had tried to in book 2), I would kill him myself.
The book is horribly written, lacks a basic plot or at least a well formed one, and is extremely cruel, not only to the characters, but also to the readers and even those who interact with the readers.
--Sorry for the exaggeratedly long comment.--

I very much agree with your assessment, I had to try to read the book three times before I was able to choke down the first seven or eight chapters. I found myself hating the main character not only for being whiny, but also for being ungrateful for what she does have.

I agree greatly with this post. Twilight is not a good book and does not deserve the breath taking credit it is given. I agree with your views on Bella. I'm surprised you didn't touch a tad deep with the annoying arrogant personality of Edward. But, nonetheless, I fancied your view. Its nice to find others like myself who do not like the books.

<i>"That’s why Twilight is dangerous: it celebrates a new kind of teenage girl, one who doesn’t have any value in herself. One who can’t see the beauty underneath the circumstances, so she becomes an emotional prostitute, using love as a desperate try for security and meaning."</i>

Disappointingly for me, a number of my friends (both male and female) are enraptured with Twilight. the above quoted struck me as particularly perceptive and mirrors my own feelings on the book. Leaving aside the strong anti-abortion propaganda and fundamentalist overtones present in the novels (which are subjectively good or bad, based on your position on either topic), I don't think any reasonable person would want to advocate the teenage girl archetype that Stephanie Meyer is offering.

I enjoyed reading this post. It's nice to see somebody engage with Twilight from a somewhat academic and analytical perspective, as opposed to the usual gushing over the 'sparkliness' of its characters.

I don't really have a problem with the book (although it's not something I like), it's just that the people that are crazed fangirls for the book annoy me.

They force Twilight on everyone who hasn't read it and one of them thinks it's the Bible.
Why devote your whole life to a book that's not that well-written in the first place?
